How can you help someone experiencing a mental health crisis?
According to “Mental Health First Aid”, the most important facet of recovery is hope. It is the catalyst of the recovery process, and without hope, situa?ons involving psychological distress can deteriorate rapidly. When someone is in the midst of emotional distress, it can be difficult to hold onto hope that things can change. The role you play in fostering hope may be the most valuable contribution you can make in supporting someone in a mental health crisis. What you can do: assess for suicide and harm, listen non-judgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies.
